Second Lesson

Omission of the definite article

Before uncoutable nouns : not defined by context, a clause or a phrase

Uncountable nouns like

Ink – water – oil – chalk – meat – sand –coffee – butter – sugar – milk – bread - juice

Example

Do you like Moroccan bread
Milk is good for children’s health

BUT

The milk on the table was spilled ( defined by a phrase

The Moroccan bread we ate yesterday was fabulous ( defined by a clause

Before abstract nouns: undefined by context, a clause or a phrased

– Love is not find in all homes.
– Freedom is a right for all humans.

Exceptions : The soul – the mind – the spirit

Before meals ( undefined

Breakfast – supper – lunch – dinner

- breakfast is ready.

· BUT : The lunch they gave us was excellent ( defined by a clause)

Before some diseases

- Measles is dangerous for children.
- Cancer is th main consern of modern medicine.
Flu – plague – AIDS – mumps - A (H1N1

Before seasons, days, holidays

– Christmas is near.
– Friday will be suitable for me.
– I like spring very much but I don’t like autumn

BUT : We will meet the second Monday of November next week.
The winter we spent in Marrakesh was terrible.

Before certain words like

School – college – bed – church – chapel – hospital – market – prison – town – home – work – court

When these wordsare used for their usual purpose, we use no article

Examlpes

We went to mosque to pray

BUT : Some tourists went to the mosque to take a picture of the ceiling

The wounded was taken to hospital.

BUT : We went to the hospital to see old Mr.Jefferson

Before proper names

- King Mohamad the sixth BUT : The king of Morocco ( defined

President Obama BUT : The president of the US
- Doctor Bennani – Professor Jones …

Before countries

Morocco – England – Irak – Egypt – France – Japan – Tunisia – Saudi Arabia …

Exceptions

The U.S.A. – The Sudan – The Yemen – The U.A.Emirates - The U.K. – The Ivory coast – The Congo – The Soviet Union ( Now : Russia

Before disciplines (school subjects

Mathematics – biology – physics – art – sport – science

- I love biology, but I hate Mathemtics
